Johnnie O’Neal earned his Ph.D. in social work from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2013. His first faculty appointment was as assistant professor (tenured) and chair of social work at The College of New Rochelle in New York state until the college closed in 2019. At that point, he served in a teach-out capacity as assistant professor and interim social work program Bronx coordinator with Mercy College, also in New York state.
In addition to his dissertation work on older MSM and HIV awareness and serving as a graduate research assistant within the School of Social Work, O’Neal co-coordinated the VCU School of Nursing’s Center for Biobehavioral Clinical Research under the direction of Mary Jo Grap, Ph.D. Here he assisted principal investigators with research proposals and supervised a team of research assistants with participant recruitment and data collection.
Professor O’Neal is ecstatic to return to VCU’s School of Social Work as a visiting professor. He brings with him a wealth of experience in medical social work, teaching social work at the undergraduate and graduate levels, academic and professional student advising, and community-based research.
