Mauricio P. Yabar, LCSW, M.Ed., CST, is a first-year doctoral student at Virginia Commonwealth University School of Social Work. He is a licensed clinical social worker and AASECT-certified sex therapist. He draws on postmodern and narrative theory to inform his clinical work and research. His professional background includes providing therapeutic services to sexually-diverse populations. Yabar’s research interests include the effects of social shame on sexual development and identity. He would like to conduct research that can inform therapeutic services for youth sex offenders and other stigmatized populations.

Yabar’s research interests from his previous training in human sexuality and apprenticeship experience in narrative theory and practice. Prior to being in the doctoral program, Yabar worked as a therapist in Denver. He was employed in non-profit agencies, hospital settings, and owned his private practice for several years. He was an adjunct instructor at the University of Denver in the Graduate School of Social Work. Yabar has presented at several conferences in the U.S. and internationally.

Yabar holds a Master of Clinical Social Work (M.S.W.) and a Master of Human Sexuality (M.Ed.) from Widener University in Pennsylvania. Yabar received his Bachelor of Arts in Psychology with Minors in Health Studies and Sociology from Montclair State University in New Jersey.

Originally from Lima, Peru, Yabar immigrated to the United States at the age of 14 not knowing a word of English. Guided by his passion and determination, he overcame the unique challenges that many immigrants often face. With the support of a working single mother, he embraced every opportunity that was presented to him. Yabar owes his accomplishments to the women who raised him, especially his grandmother.

Yabar enjoys traveling with his husband and experiencing different cultures. He’s known for his love of food-spicy food, in particular (he’ll put hot sauce on almost everything). Despite being allergic to cats, he has two (Ramona and Luann) and an adorable pitbull mix (Ajax). To relax, Yabar likes running, taking photos, decorating, and watching lots of true crime shows.
