Academic support

Balancing coursework and pursuing professional development while managing the challenges of everyday life can be overwhelming at times.

Our school's Office of Student Success can help students by connecting them with academic resources and services.

Writing resources

On-campus social work students may access the VCU Writing Center, which provides in-person and virtual writing consultation to both undergraduate and graduate students across the university.

Online M.S.W. students may work with the school’s student success writing advisor, who provides a comprehensive approach to writing consultation with an emphasis on understanding APA format and critical/analytical thinking. Appointments are available over the phone, via video chat and in person. The writing advisor also offers writing workshops throughout the school year to help students improve their skills as a writer.

Other helpful writing resources

APA format and citations: VCU Libraries research guides

This VCU Libraries site provides a host of APA-related resources.

APA format and style guide: Purdue Online Writing Lab

The Purdue Online Writing Lab site provides extensive grammar resources and helpful tools for writing, including APA resource guides, and has examples of papers, in-text citations, endnotes/footnotes and the reference page.

Professional development

As students' academic career begins to come to a close, they will start to focus on their future career and developing the skills necessary to seek, find and obtain employment. VCU's Career Services team is available to help. From resume creation to negotiating a salary, advisors can provide students with the tools necessary to be successful after graduation.

Professional development workshops are hosted throughout the academic year with our partners at VCU Career Services, and students can request individual career advising via Handshake at VCU. In addition, online resources are available year-round.
