Victoria Cashio, LCSW, BCD, is a third-year, military doctoral student at Virginia Commonwealth University School of Social Work. She has served in the U.S. Army for over 15 years, enlisted as a healthcare specialist and commissioned as a behavioral health science officer in 2012. She has worked in a mostly clinical capacity for nine years, and her interests extend to leadership, organizational behavior and the holistic health of service members and their families. Her research focus is understanding the experiences of individuals in the military community who identify as transgender and gender-diverse.
Cashio received her bachelor’s from City of New York (CUNY)-Hunter College (2006), majoring in psychology with a minor in Africana, Puerto Rican, & Latino studies. She completed her M.S.W. through the Army-Fayetteville State University program in Fort Sam Houston, Texas (2013). She completed two years of clinical internship in mental health, family violence and substance abuse services at Tripler Army Medical Center and Schofield Army Health Clinic, Hawaii. Cashio then completed a graduate certificate of completion in industrial and organizational psychology through Grand Canyon University (2020).
Cashio plans to use her education to inform the development of evidenced-based leadership and more inclusive policies and procedures in the U.S. Army. Key issues of interest are the integration and transition experiences of transgender servicemembers, education and competency of gender-affirming practices, and support for military families with transgender and gender-diverse dependents.
In her free time, Cashio enjoys traveling, immersing herself in the environment and cultures of the places she visits. She is happiest spending time in nature, observing animals in their natural habitats and then enjoying a local meal. Her husband is her most willing travel companion, and they do their best to instill these passions in their two children. Her family also includes her dogs, who are always close by when she is working from home.
